It has been a long time since we have taken a look at the CPU architectures in Intel’s pipeline, but thanks to a recent post at Bright Side of News, we have some likely-true rumours to share! Due out in Q2 of 2012 we, of course, have Intel’s 22nm die shrink Ivy Bridge CPUs, which we have widely reported on. Where things get interesting, however, is with Intel’s post-Ivy Bridge plans.
Sometime in 2013 we will be seeing Intel’s brand new Haswell architecture debut with their Haswell processors followed by a die shrink of the Haswell architecture to 14nm, which will lead to the debut of Broadwell processors in 2014, which is rumoured to be “first true System-on-Chip design, integrating features such as Ethernet, Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 – all inside one single package.”
In 2015 we will see yet another architecture introduced, Skylake, which will debut with the Skylake processors and an 11nm die shrink in 2016 that will lead to the Skymont processor. Very little is known about this architecture right now, but Bright Side of News is reporting that Skylake may bring DirectX (likely 12 at that time) to the architecture.
Right now this may not be the most interesting news, but it’s a great primer for what will be coming down the pipeline over the next four to five years. For more on these architectures, head over to Bright Side of News!

I’m kind of disappointed not seeing any quantum processors in Intel’s pipeline in the near future.
